The Battery Revolution
Homeowners are increasingly turning to solar panels and lithium-ion batteries as a way to shield themselves from volatile electricity prices. This trend has not gone unnoticed by energy authorities, who are now concerned about the potential impact on the wider grid.
The benefits of home batteries are twofold: they store abundant solar energy during the day, reducing reliance on coal and gas, and then discharge this energy during peak demand periods after sunset. This not only slashes power bills for individual households but also lowers wholesale prices across the grid.
However, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has identified a key issue: too few home batteries are synchronized to charge and discharge at the most optimal times for the grid. This means the full potential of these batteries to support the grid is not being realized.
Virtual Power Plants: The Solution?
The ACCC's report highlights the need for an expansion of “virtual power plants” – cloud-based networks that aggregate thousands of household batteries into a single, coordinated power source. By joining these virtual power plants, homeowners can receive bill credits in exchange for allowing their power providers access to their stored electricity at critical times.
Virtual power plants offer several advantages. They can respond more reliably and efficiently to price signals and grid needs, reducing the reliance on grid-scale storage and enhancing system reliability and security. This, in turn, leads to lower costs for all electricity consumers.
According to the Australian Energy Market Operator's blueprint, around 26% of households will need to have batteries installed by 2050, with more than half of these batteries participating in virtual power plants. However, current participation rates are well below this target, with only 3% of east-coast customers having batteries and just 24% of those owners being part of a virtual power plant.
Barriers to Adoption
So, why aren't more homeowners signing up for virtual power plants? Robbie Campbell, CEO of Plico, believes it's a matter of trust. “It’s a trust problem,” he says. “Too many in the industry are not focused enough on ensuring consumers understand how the schemes operate and the potential benefits.”
Campbell argues that households won't subsidize the grid out of goodwill; they need to see the financial benefits clearly. “Show them the money, show them how it’s made, and they’ll stay in a virtual power plant,” he adds.
However, not everyone agrees that the issue is solely about trust. Tristan Edis, head of analysis at Green Energy Markets, believes the energy market operator's assumptions about battery behavior outside virtual power plants may be too pessimistic. “Maybe we don’t need as many enrolled in virtual power plants as we previously thought,” he says, pointing to the growing popularity of retail offerings that encourage batteries to absorb low-cost midday electricity and discharge it during peak evening periods.

Energy providers must find ways to engage and educate homeowners about the benefits of virtual power plants, while also ensuring that the financial incentives are clear and attractive. At the same time, the energy market must continue to evolve and adapt, finding new ways to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices without relying solely on government mandates or subsidies.
